A very thought provoking piece. I have a similar photo of me in my swim suit knitted by my mother in the extremely early 1950's!!!!

Re-cycled hippy....just happy that I'm old enough to have seen Hendrix, Clapton and Mayall live!!

The shells and rocks are kinda cheesy, and the b/w pics are kinda spooky. I really like compositions such as these. They compound nostalgia with the universal nothingness of being.

Our swimsuits were probably late 1950s and were ruched and elasticated fabric, not knitted. I'm guessing the kitted one stretched completely out of shape as soon as you got into the water just like our elasticated ones did - not a pretty sight!

Not sure why you think the shells are "cheesy" but thanks for your thoughts.

Hmmm, I don't get a cheesy vibe from this. There is a melancholy feel though, or maybe that's me projecting. Very nice work Alison.

-Let me preface this by writing that I am guilty of this all the time and am by no means beyond reproach.
It's just that when using common kitschy elements (like shells, Elvis, horses etc.) in paintings its hard not to harken back to the millions of other interpretations that have been witnessed before ad nauseam. And I understand this is an intentional aim for some artists, but am pretty sure it wasn't for you. The painting really is lovely as always Alison, its just a peeve and I figured you wouldn't mind the honesty.
An old Professor of mine (Morris Yarowsky) once told me and a host of other Art School idiots that "no one will paint a cat in my class". He never elaborated, but as the term went on it became obvious as we experimented beyond our comfort zones.
Take it easy, S-
